Think about undertones
Each type of wood can be classified into warm or cool undertones. Warm undertones include shades of yellow, orange and red, while cool undertones come closer with blue, green, black and gray. When you mix woods, you want them all to have the same undertones – all warm or all cool. This helps the room feel cohesive and harmonious rather than overwhelming the space. Don’t know how to collect it all? Obtain samples of the woods you plan to use in your space and compare the undertones of the woods to each other before you begin.

Choose a dominant wood
Since these are metals, choose a dominant tone that will serve as the base for the entire room. The predominant wood is either the flooring, the ceiling, the furniture or the largest piece of furniture in the room. Based on the predominant wood, choose accent woods that complement it and add some contrast and layers to the overall look. Don’t stick with the same wood tone to avoid a too matching look.

Keep natural variations in mind
Since wood is a natural element, there are usually natural differences between individual types of wood. You will notice some differences in the grain of the woods you choose. So take this into account when choosing your wood species if you don’t want the grain to make the room look busy. We recommend you choose white oak or maple, as these types of wood tend to have more subtle variations and a cleaner look.

Create contrast
It is important that the different wood tones do not overwhelm the space. Create contrast and balance by incorporating pieces made from different materials. For example, if you’re mixing wood tones in a living room, add a metal coffee table, a sofa with cozy fabric, and a rug to break up the look of the room. If you’re mixing wood tones in a kitchen or bathroom, use backsplash tiles and matte hardware as contrasting elements.
