This incredible mountain home was designed by the architect as a welcoming retreat Kirk Michels along with Urban studio at the Yellowstone Club, a private resort west of Big Sky, Montana. Designed for a Florida couple, the interior design of this classic lodge-style home is influenced by the owner’s varied backgrounds.
Inside you’ll find stacked stone, rustic beamed ceilings and cracked walls. The owners wanted a log cabin with a modern feel – the furnishings and decor were reminiscent of the woman’s Peruvian heritage and the man’s Scottish roots.
Above: Accenting the entrance to this mountain retreat is a chair crafted from a vintage grain bin. The entrance door is custom-made.
Above: As you enter this home you are greeted by a cozy fireplace with a painting above the mantel by Native American artist Ben Pease. A vintage Turkish rug adds structure to the foot. The Mongolian sheepskin chair was sourced from Baxter.
Above: On the wall hangs a large-format photographic print of a stampeding bison by David Yarrow Photography. A pair of Italian leather sofas from Baxter beautifully complement a coffee table from Taracea Furniture. The chairs were sourced from Verellen Furniture. The flooring for this room is a textured rug from The Rug Company.

We love how the designer has combined custom and vintage pieces with some family treasures to create a beloved home retreat. Colorful artwork evokes the region’s western flair, while designer lighting and furnishings add a touch of luxury to this rustic property.

To create a balance between rustic and contemporary styles, the design team added contrasting finishes to select interiors. This also includes plaster on the ceiling in the dining room and master bedroom to balance out the rougher wooden elements.
